A few years ago I was in the barns at the Calgary Stampede the greatest something on earth and a time when us suburbanites get in touch with our western roots. One of my favourite parts is the barns. They are always filled with beautiful animals.

I was wandering between rows and stumbled into a lama section of the barns. Lamas are majestic creatures that in our imaginations bring to mid Emperor’s New Groove and adventures. In real life they are cranky. Oh and need to be castrated. Two lama ranchers were in the midst of a detailed and alarming conversation about the best methods to castrate lamas. I heard every detail. There were so many. Techniques they’d honed over the years, personal preferences, gear. There is a reason I don’t live on a farm and never acquired that pet lama.
